Visit by Prof. William Powderly

As part of his visit to deliver the Vice Chancellor's Occasional Lecture, on the topic " Why Transdisplinary Science is critical to address Global Health Challenges: Lessons from HIV/AIDS, Prof. Powderly visited the School of Public Health. This is his 3rd visit to Ghana but his first to the School.

Prof. Wiliam Powderly is a Professor of Medicine and is the Director of the Institute for Public Health at Washington University in St. Louis, USA. He is also the Director of Infectious Diseases at the Washington University School of Medicine. From 2005-2012, he was the Dean of Medicine and Head of the School of Medicine and Medical Sciences at University College Dublin in Ireland. Prof. Powderly has been actively involved in HIV-related clinical research for over 25years. He has been a member of numerous advisory groups on HIV and Infectious Diseases for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the U.S. Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, The Canadian Institute for Health Research, and the European Medicines Agency. He is the author of more than 350 scientific journal articles and book chapters in HIV and AIDS, and the co-editor  of a major international textbook on infectious diseases. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland, the Infectious Diseases Society of America, and the American Association of Science.

His visit to the School of Public Health was to interact with faculty and students, specifially PhD students, to identify and discuss collaborations in teaching and research. Areas discussed include activities such as workshops that would eventually lead to the publication of a series of papers, inter-disciplinary research activities and the development of new joint courses for students studying different disciplines to encourage inter-disciplinary thinking. In short, discussions centered on collaborations that would benefit both faculty and students.

The Washington University School of Medicine is the top medical school in the US. The Institute for Public Health at the University has the following centres:

  • Centre for Public Health Data and Training

He also visited the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research.
