This webinar aims to discuss the “health research mentorship in low- and middle-income countries (HERMES) guide” that focuses on institutional mentorship. Institutionalizing research mentorship is defined as the nurturing of research capacity in organizations (e.g., universities, professional associations, or research institutes) to improve research effectiveness and health equity. Part 1: Presentations

Dr. Eneyi Kpokiri

Dr. Eneyi Kpokiri, is a clinical pharmacist and an Assistant Professor in the Clinical Research Department, Faculty of Infectious & Tropical Diseases, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

 

Prof. Mirgissa Kaba

Prof. Mirgissa Kaba, is an enthusiastic professional who has competencies that bridged the gap between social and public health sciences during his close to 30 years of teaching. He is an associate Professor at Addis Ababa University, School of Public Health, Ethiopia.

 

Part 2: Panel Discussion

Prof. Joseph Tucker (Chair)

Prof. Joseph D. Tucker is an infectious diseases physician and tenured Professor at UNC Chapel Hill. He has a special interest in social innovation and was part of the team that developed the HERMES practical guide.

 

Prof. Phyllis Dako-Gyeke

Prof. Phyllis Dako-Gyeke is an Associate Professor at the University of Ghana School of Public Health and the Coordinator of the Regional Training Centre focusing on implementation research, in the WHO/TDR Africa Region.

 

Prof. Barbara Castelnuovo

Barbara Castelnuovo is an infectious diseases specialist with a 20-year experience in Uganda working at the Infectious Diseases Institute. She is passionate about mentoring and guiding scholars and early-stage investigators towards a fulfilling career. She created and leads the Research Capacity Building Unit at the Institute to provide structured and intentional mentorship and to support scholars to acquire research skills. 

 

Prof. Daniel Yilma Bogale

Professor of Medicine in Jimma University, Ethiopia and research fellow at Infectious Disease Data Observatory at University of Cape Town. He was a WHO/TDR fellow and has served as clinical and research mentor in his institutions. He contributed to developing the HERMES guide.
