Senior level leaders, managers and practitioners in the health sector have undergone a-two week workshop in health policy and systems to build their leadership and managerial capacity.

The workshop, organised by the University of Ghana and the Research Development Division of the Ghana Health Service with support from the Rockerfeller Foundation Transforming Health Systems, was aimed at influencing participants to support health system transformation and strengthening for improved health outcomes.

Thus, the participants, numbering a little over 20, were exposed to four seminars, namely strategic and critically reflective leadership practice, leading and managing in complex adaptive systems, health policy and systems research and policy analysis and implementation.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the workshop, Prof John Gyapong, pro-vice chancellor of the University of Ghana in-charge of research, innovation and development, congratulated the participants for availing themselves.

He said managing a health system is one of the complex fields to work in, taking into consideration the human and other resources one has to deal with on a daily basis.

Prof Gyapong, therefore, urged the participants to practise what they have acquired with the understanding that the way health systems work is important to a successful running of a health institution.

Dr Irene Agyepong, giving an overview of the seminar, said participants have been equipped to lead within the complex health system, understand health systems as complex adaptive systems, recognise system level properties that result from dynamic interactions among human and social systems and the effect of and on relationships among individuals, groups, organisations, communities and environment.

“The seminar supported trainees to develop skills in understanding and influencing decision making at all levels of policy development, including agenda setting, formulation, implementation, monitoring and evaluation using scientific knowledge,” she said.

The participants were presented with certificates of participation by the Dean of School of Public Health, Prof Richard Adanu, and Prof Col (Rtd) Edwin A. Afari, short course coordinator, University Of Ghana.
