Overview

Opened in 1994, the University of Ghana’s School of Public Health (SPH) is a constituent school of the College of Health Sciences (CHS) and has a strong track record of community outreach as well as has advanced research, health education and practice to create the much needed solutions to public health challenges not only in Ghana but other African countries. The School has an enviable reputation of undertaking multidisciplinary research and training on key health issues in Ghana and around the world.

The School has established an extensive research partner network with leading institutions in over 35 countries on a regional and international scale for successful international collaborative research and training projects. The School collaborates with a number of governmental institutions in Ghana in its discharge of Teaching, Research, and Extensions Services. Current projects include implementation and research programs through funding from a range of multi-lateral and private donors.

The Ghana Health Service and Ministry of Health currently require all district health directors to have at least an MPH degree which has created a consistent demand for the MPH program. The School commenced its novel Bachelor of Public Health degree program in October 2010. Furthermore, SPH serves as a training resource center for the sub-region and beyond, with courses designed for students in Sierra Leone, Nigeria, and other countries in the east and south of Africa.

The School has highly qualified and motivated academic and administrative staff working hard to ensure the achievement of the mission of the School. Due to the high caliber of faculty in the school, the SPH has been a preferred partner to most institutions, including government (MOH and GHS) in carrying out health projects and reforms, and has contributed to the various policies and interventions within the health sector in the country. The staff are experienced experts in a range of areas, including Population, Family and Reproductive Health and Social and Behavioral Science.
